The Sacré-Cœur is the white-domed church at the top with incredible city views. Then we'll hit the Champs-Élysées, Paris's most famous boulevard, ending at the Arc de Triomphe where you can climb to the rooftop for a 360° view.

  • Morning: Montmartre hilltop — Sacré-Cœur church, Place du Tertre artists' square
  • Lunch: back in Le Marais
  • Afternoon: stroll through Tuileries Garden, then down the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe (climb to the rooftop!)

Today we take the TGV — France's famous high-speed train that goes up to 200 mph — from Paris to Basel, Switzerland. Then a scenic Swiss train through green rolling hills to Lucerne, a storybook town on a crystal-clear lake surrounded by Alps. The Chapel Bridge is a 700-year-old wooden covered bridge right in the middle of town — it's the most photographed spot in Switzerland.

  • Connect: Swiss train Basel → Lucerne (~1 hr through countryside)
  • Afternoon: walk the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke, built in 1333!), explore the cobblestone Old Town

Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip

This is the big one! The "Golden Round Trip" is a famous loop that takes you up Mount Pilatus (7,000 ft) using four different types of transport: a scenic lake boat, the world's steepest cogwheel railway (it literally goes up at a 48° angle!), a cable car, and a gondola. You'll have lunch at the summit with a 360° view of the Swiss Alps stretching to the horizon.

  • Scenic boat cruise across Lake Lucerne to Alpnachstad (~1.5 hrs — sit on the upper deck!)
  • World's steepest cogwheel railway up to Pilatus summit (2,132m / 7,000 ft)
  • Lunch at the mountaintop restaurant — 360° panoramic Alpine views
  • Aerial cableway (big cabin) + panorama gondola (smaller, open-air) back down to Kriens
  • Short bus ride back to Lucerne

GoldenPass Panoramic Day Trip

The GoldenPass Express is a special panoramic train with floor-to-ceiling glass windows — it feels like riding through a screensaver. The route goes over the Brünig mountain pass through meadows, waterfalls, and tiny Swiss villages to Interlaken, a resort town sitting between two turquoise lakes with the massive Jungfrau mountain (13,600 ft) towering above.

  • GoldenPass Express: Lucerne → Interlaken (~2 hrs of jaw-dropping scenery)
  • Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows — every seat is a window seat
  • Explore Interlaken: walk the Höheweg promenade with Jungfrau mountain views
  • Optional: Harder Kulm funicular (a steep little railway up a cliff for eagle-eye views)
  • Return train Interlaken → Lucerne (~2 hrs)
🚞 GoldenPass Express reservation — ~$50 for 2 (train itself covered by Eurail)

We cross from Switzerland into Italy today! The train goes through the famous Gotthard Pass — one of Europe's most scenic Alpine routes — to Milan, then a little local train hugs the shore of Lake Como to Varenna. This tiny fishing village is our base for 3 nights: think pastel-colored houses clinging to a hillside, stone stairways draped in bougainvillea, and glassy lake water reflecting the mountains.

  • Connect: local train Milan → Varenna-Esino (~1 hr along the lakeshore)
  • Afternoon: wander Varenna's stone lanes, visit Villa Monastero (a lakeside villa with beautiful botanical gardens)

Bellagio & Private Sunset Boat Tour

Bellagio is called the "Pearl of the Lake" — it sits right at the point where Lake Como splits into a Y-shape, so you get views in every direction. It's a quick 15-minute ferry ride from Varenna. In the late afternoon, we'll board a private classic wooden boat (like something out of a James Bond movie) for a 2-4 hour sunset cruise on the lake.

  • Morning: hop the ferry to Bellagio (~15 min) — wander stepped cobblestone lanes and boutiques
  • Visit Villa Melzi gardens (a lakeside park with sculptures and huge old trees)

  • Late afternoon: private wooden boat tour on Lake Como at sunset
⛵ Private sunset boat tour — ~$325–419 for the whole boat

Lake Como — Relaxation Day

A slow, lazy day on the lake. Varenna has a tiny public beach (lido) right on the lake where you can swim in the clear Alpine water. In the afternoon, take the ferry across to Tremezzo to visit Villa Carlotta — a grand 18th-century villa with some of the most spectacular botanical gardens in Europe, right on the lakefront.

  • Morning: swim at Varenna's lido beach, espresso on the waterfront piazza
  • Midday: ferry to Tremezzo, visit Villa Carlotta (a grand villa with world-class botanical gardens)
  • Afternoon: ferry back to Varenna, read and relax by the lake
  • Evening: farewell lakeside dinner in Varenna

Day 10 — Sunday, September 7

Varenna → Florence

We take Italy's sleek Frecciarossa ("Red Arrow") high-speed train — it goes up to 186 mph and has comfy 1st class seats with welcome drinks. Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, where Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo worked. The Duomo is the massive cathedral in the center of town with Brunelleschi's famous red dome — you can climb 463 steps to the top for an unforgettable view. Ponte Vecchio is the medieval bridge lined with gold and jewelry shops.

  • Morning: train Varenna → Milan (~1 hr), then Frecciarossa to Florence (~1 hr 45 min)
  • Afternoon: Piazza del Duomo — climb Brunelleschi's Dome (463 steps, but worth every one!)
  • Walk to Piazza della Signoria (Florence's main square, like an outdoor sculpture museum)
  • Evening: dinner near Ponte Vecchio (the famous medieval bridge with gold shops), gelato at Vivoli
🚄 Frecciarossa 1st Class — ~2.5 hrs total
Stay: Florence, near Santa Maria Novella station
Day 11 — Monday, September 8

Florence — City & Art

The Uffizi is one of the greatest art museums in the world — it has Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" and works by Leonardo and Raphael. The Accademia has Michelangelo's David — the 17-foot marble statue that's probably the most famous sculpture ever made. End the day at Piazzale Michelangelo, a hillside terrace across the river with a panoramic sunset view over the entire city — bring a bottle of wine (or sparkling water!) and watch the Duomo glow golden.

  • Morning: Uffizi Gallery (book timed tickets!) — Botticelli, da Vinci, Raphael
  • Lunch: Mercato Centrale (a gorgeous 19th-century food hall — think high-end food court inside a historic iron-and-glass market building)
  • Afternoon: Accademia Gallery (Michelangelo's David — 17 ft of pure marble genius)
  • Walk to Piazzale Michelangelo for the best sunset view in Florence
  • Evening: dinner in the Oltrarno (the artisan neighborhood across the river)
Stay: Florence
San Gimignano medieval towers Tuscany Siena Piazza del Campo aerial view Tuscan countryside rolling green hills cypress trees
Day 12 — Tuesday, September 9

San Gimignano & Siena Day Trip

A guided day trip through the Tuscan countryside to two medieval hilltop towns. San Gimignano is nicknamed the "Medieval Manhattan" because it still has 14 ancient stone towers rising above the town (originally there were 72!). It's also famous for having the world's best gelato (officially — the shop has won world championships). Siena is a larger medieval city built around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, where they run the famous Palio horse race. The cathedral is absolutely jaw-dropping inside.

  • Morning: coach departs Florence (~9 hr guided tour with free time in each town)
  • San Gimignano: medieval towers (the "Manhattan skyline of Tuscany"), Piazza della Cisterna, world-champion gelato shop
  • Rolling Tuscan countryside between towns — cypress trees, vineyards, golden hills
  • Siena: Piazza del Campo (the famous shell-shaped square), Siena Cathedral (stunning black-and-white striped marble interior)
  • Free time for lunch and exploring in both towns
  • Return to Florence by early evening
🏰 San Gimignano + Siena day trip — ~$140 for 2

Rome

2 Nights · Sep 10–Sep 11
Colosseum Rome ancient amphitheater Colosseum interior arena floor Rome Trastevere Rome cobblestone street evening
Day 13 — Wednesday, September 10

Florence → Rome

Another quick Frecciarossa ride and we're in Rome! The Colosseum is the 2,000-year-old amphitheater where gladiators fought — it held 50,000 spectators. Right next to it is the Roman Forum, the ancient city center with ruined temples and arches. In the evening, we'll cross the river to Trastevere — Rome's most atmospheric neighborhood with ivy-covered buildings, live music drifting out of trattorias, and a guided food tour where we'll eat our way through 5-6 stops of Roman street food.

  • Morning: Frecciarossa Florence → Rome Termini (~1.5 hrs, 1st Class)
  • Afternoon: Colosseum + Roman Forum (book skip-the-line tickets — the regular line can be 2+ hours)
  • Walk past: Spanish Steps, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, visit the Pantheon (free entry — a 2,000-year-old temple with a giant hole in the ceiling called the "oculus")
  • Evening: Trastevere Food Tour — 3-4 hrs of Roman street food, pasta, supplì (fried rice balls), and local treats
🚄 Frecciarossa 1st Class — ~1.5 hrs
